Transformers is beautiful
yeah the Decepticons were good at first but lost their shit during the war well guess what, I fucking love that for them. Because narratively and in a story standpoint that's just a work of art..! Autobots will be the good guys and the Decepticons are the bad guys, that's good enough for me. its weird coming from someone who genuinely thinks that the Decepticons are right tho yeah LMAO
It's just nice that from a story standpoint, it's truly a work or art. There could've been a story where the Decepticons were the rebellious group against the fascist Autobots (disregarding Shattered glass), it would've been a simple story. But no, it isn't.
The Decepticons had good intentions but eventually turned evil in their ways, and the Autobots were maintaining an unjust society but realized their mistakes.
This is the art of it. It makes you, the viewer, really put a second thought to whether either side is good or bad.
I ask you these:
Today, do you look at an Autobot and think of the horrible doings they had in the past, or do you think of them as the people who look to the future optimistically, striving for a better life of freedom?
Today, do you look at a Decepticon and think about the rebellious group who wanted to change their unjust society, or do you think of them as the militarized warmongering empire?
Those questions are for you yourself to decide, which you want to strive for for the future of the race and to me that's really beautiful.
This is the whole beauty of it. It conflicts with the viewer as much as it has for the characters that play in it. G1 proposed a very simple premise of "Autobots good, Decepticons evil", but through a vast amount of reboots and writers, it has truly made itself more than meets the eye. It shifts its premise to "Autobots used to be bad and Decepticons used to be good", which made it simple enough to spark so much debate and second thoughts to how the story of Transformers is supposed to be. Are the Autobots really good? Are the Decepticons really bad? If you don't only judge for their actions and see them for their hearts, who knows. Either an Autobot or Decepticon could do the most heinous war crime and somehow still be called as the good or bad guy.
It all simply boils down— that it's almost comical to say the least— that neither factions of the war are on the right or wrong side. Which is possibly by all means why the war lasted so long in the first place. Neither side thinks they're wrong for what they're doing. But are they really right? Who knows.
